About

In the melting pot of traditional Thai culture and the deluge of modern Western influences, all members of Thai society are facing unfamiliar territory. In this climate, the Thai Ministry of Education System is struggling to respond effectively across all socio-economic levels, putting additional pressure on the Welfare Boarding Schools. Given this, English for an Edge, endeavors to provide English language skills in a manner that will equip the learner with the abilities to thrive in such a vast and volatile environment.

Welfare Boarding School students are a unique concern, as they lack family guidance and a solid support base, placing obligation on the school to provide basic moral, psychological, and sociological development. For a variety of reasons, life has robbed them of this foundation. The children, teenagers, and young adults in welfare schools fall into ten different categories:

  • orphans
  • street children
  • the abandoned
  • the impoverished
  • the physically abused
  • those infected with HIV/AIDS
  • sex workers
  • those forced into the labor market
  • those affected by narcotic drugs
  • hilltribe children

Critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving are imperative skills for these uniquely challenged students in their quest to become successful members of Thai society. In order to provide these resources, an entirely English space has been created in the form of an English Room in one school, as a flagship for a network of English classrooms across Thailand. This is an inviting and vibrant space where every student is given the opportunity to absorb a multitude of authentic English materials and guided through a holistic educational process by a native English speaker who fosters critical thinking in tomorrow’s engaging minds.
